IQ vs EQ in Business

Why more and more job applicants are assessed using emotional intelligence.

No one doubts how useful intelligence as measured by IQ tests are, but the simple fact is that humility and sensitivity in business are greater indicators of success.

Emotional intelligence (EQ, or sometimes EI) qualities are strongly correlated with an ability to successfully manage a team.

"While people may forget what you said, they tend not to forget how you make them feel." - Maya Angelou (1928-2014)

One of the major reasons EQ tests are so useful is that 68% of us have an IQ between 85 and 115, and only a small fraction have an IQ below 70 (low) or above 130 (high). If you assume most applicants are average, EQ becomes a more definitive indicator.

Studies have shown that fortune tends to follow those with a high degree of emotional intelligence. Furthermore IQ is strongly linked with hereditary qualities whereas EQ is something that can be taught.

Calmworks® works with companies to help them assess candidates with appropriate measures and specilises in teaching EQ skills.
